Minority Carrier Diffusion in the Base of a Bipolar Transistor

In this demonstration we are focusing on tracing the behavior of individual carriers. The colors identify the carriers to trace, the non-pink ones can be though of as sheets of charge. When they diffuse they form an approximate gaussian curve. Also you can follow the non-pink ones and see how the diffusion mixes them up. The black balls are the newly emitted carriers. They can come from the emitter or collector when they are forward biased. By watching them you can see how much time it takes for them to be collected.
Since we are interested in tracing individual carriers, one ball is equal to one carrier. On this scale you can see how chaotic the behavior is for individual carriers.
